All education is self-education.  Period.  It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting in a college classroom or a coffee shop.  We don’t learn anything we don’t want to learn.

Those people who take the time and initiative to pursue knowledge on their own are the only ones who earn a real education in this world.

Take a look at any widely acclaimed scholar, entrepreneur or historical figure you can think of.  Formal education or not, you’ll find that he or she is a product of continuous self-education.

Note that some of the sources overlap between various subjects of education.  Therefore, each has been placed under a specific subject based on the majority focus of the source’s content.

Google Online University – Online Mobile App Jobs

Google Online University

Google launches new courses in mobile App programming with online education provider Udacity. Google is starting to take education into its own hands with the launch of four new courses to teach the next generation of mobile programmers how to use its Android operating system.

Today at Google’s big annual developers conference, I/O, the company announced plans to expand its vocational training partnership with online education provider Udacity.

Thanks in part to a broken immigration system, Silicon Valley is constantly starved for talent. Even worse, our institutions of higher education treat vocational training like “the ugly stepchildren of education,” often refusing to provide practical hands-on learning that will help students get a job after graduation. As a result, start ups like Udacity have teamed up with industry to close the skills gap.

In this case, Google has helped build courses in four programming areas (Android fundamentals, Cloud fundamentals, UX fundamentals, and web performance) to help build out the number of people who can develop the next generation of apps for its growing operating system.

There is no word yet on whether Google will officially incorporate these new courses into its hiring process. Earlier this month, Udacity announced the creation of a new vocationally oriented alternative degree, the “nanodegree,” with a host of tech partners who would agree to recognize completion of certain courses when hiring employees.

Participating in Surveys – Online Survey Jobs

Have you ever been asked to fill out a survey regarding a particular company’s products or customer service?  Did you get paid to do it?  Probably not.

Companies love it when they can convince customers to help them out for free, but that doesn’t always garner the results that they need.  Have you ever taken a survey over the phone that starts out like, “On a scale from 1 to 5, how would you rate our service?”  Most people are inclined to press 5 or 1 for every answer, which doesn’t paint an accurate picture of the service provided.  Many companies are willing to pay consumers to take surveys because paid surveys usually provide the most accurate and honest results.

Google has completely rewritten the Quality Ratings Guideline, the resource that their team of quality raters uses to rate websites for Google. This one is a brand new version, rewritten from the ground up, so it isn’t just a refresh of the old one (and most doesn’t even resemble any of the old Guidelines that SEOs scrutinized in detail whenever one got leaked).    It has some great new insights into how Google is approaching the search results and what it takes to be a top ranked website.
